What programs am I able to conduct?

An approved Royal Life Saving NSW ‘Resuscitation Facilitator’ is able to instruct and assess the components of the Royal Life Saving Resuscitation award strands.

The Resuscitation award strand is designed for people not wishing to be involved in the aquatic awards, but who want to learn resuscitation and emergency care skills for use in land-based emergencies.

The Resuscitation strand involves the following awards:

Resuscitation Awareness Award

This award aims to provide practical experience in CPR with basic content, and can be taught to children at Primary School ages. A Resuscitation Report form must be submitted to RLSNSW Head Office, along with appropriate payment in order for Awards to be recognised, and certificates to be distributed.

Resuscitation Award

The Aim of this award is to provide the practical experience in CPR. These skills can be taught to individuals or groups, from the age of 12 years. The Resuscitation Award can be delivered through a number of pathways:

Face to Face – the Facilitator will conduct theory and practical components in a face to face format, as well as putting candidates through the RLSNSW Resuscitation Exam. A Resuscitation Report form must be submitted to RLSNSW Head Office, along with appropriate payment in order for awards to be recognised, and certificates to be distributed.
E-Resus (Resuscitation Online) – The Facilitator will order Resuscitation tokens from the Learning Platform for candidates to complete a self-paced theory module. The Facilitator can then assess the candidate in practical elements only. Candidates will receive a completion certificate upon completion of the Online course, which can be signed and dated by the Facilitator after they have successfully completed a practical assessment, and retained by the candidate as proof of their Award. A Resuscitation Report Online Report form must be submitted to RLSNSW Head Office for the awards to be recognised – no further certification will be required.
‘Community Lifesaver in a Box’ Assessment (CAB Assessment) – Candidates can purchase a CPR in a Box (CAB) from the Royal Life Saving NSW Shop. This product contains an instructional DVD which allows individuals to learn the core skills of CPR, using your own personal inflatable manikin. The product also contains a Resuscitation Certificate for a Facilitator to sign, upon completion of a Practical Assessment. Further assessments can also be recognised for an additional certificate fee. A CAB Report form must be submitted to RLSNSW Head Office, along with appropriate payment (if required) in order for Awards to be recognised, and certificates to be distributed (if required).

While a Resuscitation Award is sufficient for compliance training purposes in many industries across NSW, some industries will require their staff to be equipped with the Nationally Accredited HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation unit of competency, which cannot be issued by a Royal Life Saving NSW Facilitator.

Who can become a Resuscitation Facilitator?

An approved Royal Life Saving NSW Resuscitation Facilitator may be:

A School Teacher
A School Nurse

Or alternatively, possess one of the following qualifications:

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
AUSTSWIM Certificate

In addition, a Royal Life Saving NSW Resuscitation Facilitator must:

Hold a current Resuscitation Award or Higher (e.g. HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
- Please note that even with a current First Aid qualification, RLSNSW will still require a current Resuscitation Award, or CPR unit of competency
Hold a current Working with Children Check

How do I become a Resuscitation Facilitator?

As well as meeting the criteria above, a Resuscitation Facilitator will need to have the required knowledge to deliver a Resuscitation course, compliant with the standards of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

To finalise the application process, appropriate payment is to be made, and the Resuscitation Facilitator Workbook must be completed and submitted to Royal Life Saving NSW. In order to complete the workbook, access to the Royal Life Saving Swimming and Lifesaving Manual is essential. If you do not have access to a Swimming and Lifesaving Manual, they can be selected as an additional item at the time of registration payment. Alternatively, they are available for purchase at the Royal Life Saving Shop.

How do I maintain my currency ?

Approved Facilitator status is to be renewed annually by paying an annual fee. A Resuscitation Award, or higher must be maintained in order for a Facilitator’s status to remain as valid. A Working with Children Check must also remain valid.
